Encryption

Encryption is one of the security measures that keeps information and transactions private on the Internet.

There are currently two levels of encryption, 40-bit and 128-bit.

What is encryption and what is the difference between 40-bit and 128-bit encryption?

Encryption is the scrambling of information as it is transmitted over the Internet to protect your confidentiality.

With 40-bit encryption, there are billions of possible keys to decipher the coded information - and only one of them works. The effectiveness (or level of security) for encryption is measured in terms of how long the key is: The longer the key, the longer it would take for someone without the correct "decoder" to break the code.

With 128-bit encryption, there are 300 billion trillion times as many keys as with 40-bit encryption. It is virtually impossible for an unauthorised party to find the right key, even if they are equipped with the best computers. 128-bit encryption is the strongest form of encryption available for financial or confidential transactions over the Internet today.

What additional steps can I take to enhance my online security?

There are several measures you can take to help keep your Internet visits secure:

1.If you have a Password or User ID, do not reveal them to anyone. They are designed to protect your information, but will only work if you keep them private. If you think your Password or User ID has been compromised, you should change it immediately.

2.Don't leave your computer unattended. Unauthorised persons could access your information while you are away.

3.Once you have completed your Internet session, always sign off using the Exit or Log-Off button.
